Rand Paul On the Issues

According to a new Zogby poll, Rand Paul is currently leading amongst 2016 Republican hopefuls. This could be a bad thing, as it means more time as a target for the Left and the Establishment Republicans...though, it's going to be hard to demonize a non-career politician that still does pro-bono surgeries for folks with no health insurance in his down time.

"In the poll, the junior Senator from Kentucky polls 20%, followed by “Establishment” candidates New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush with 13% each. In fourth place is Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker with 8%, then Florida Senator Marco Rubio 7%, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindahl 4%, and New Mexico Governor Suzanna Martinez, Ohio Governor John Kasich, and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley all with 1% each.

This is the first time a GOP candidate has reached 20% in a crowded field and the first time a Zogby poll has shown someone emerging a bit from the pack."

For me, a Libertarian-leaning Conservative, Paul represents all the benefits of his father sans the kookiness. I feel like he and I agree across the board. I haven't felt like that about a candidate...ever?

Abortion: Rand believes life begins at conceptions and opposes federal funding for abortion. Check.
Economy: Shrink Government, end the Federal Reserve. Check.
Civil Rights: States should decide same-sex marriage; don't federalize it. Opposes affirmative action. Check.
Drugs: Don't promote marijuana but don't jail non-violent criminals. Check.
Education: Allow school choice for everyone, white, brown, or black. Support homeschooling and parental responsibility. Check.
Energy & Oil: Unelected EPA should not regulate greenhouse emissions. Explore proven energy reserves & keep energy prices low. Check.
Foreign Policy: Against terror but first comes preserving the Constitution. As only democracy in Mideast, Israel is important ally. Exit the UN; maintain US sovereignty. Check
Gun Control: Opposes restrictions on right to bear arms. Check.
Health Care: Believe it is Congress' job to fight to change ObamaCare. ObamaCare is still unconstitutional, despite Supreme Court. Check.
Homeland Security: Allow challenges to NSA in open court, not FISA court. Only Judiciary can detain and drone, not the President. Warrantless searches overstep Constitutional powers.Check.
Immigration: Replace de facto amnesty with bipartisan reform. Check.

No argument from me. Rand Paul is awesome.

I think that "opposes federal funding for abortion" is cover for "will do whatever is within his means to ban all abortions." This is a big problem for me and, I think, a majority or at least a large minority of voters.
Shrink government is great. End Federal Reserve is a very bad idea.
Legalizing or relaxing enforcement of drug laws would be very bad public policy.
I am all for school choice. However, I have strong reservations about home schooling.
I don't know what "Against terror but first comes preserving Constitution" means. I agree that we should stop supporting the U.N. Let the third world countries find another job for cronies.
There is a practical problem to airing challenges to NSA in open court. Jug Ears and the Chicagocrats won't control the executive forever. I want to tread very lightly here.

I like him as well. He does get a bit isolationist at times, but I'd have zero problems voting for him.

OT, Glad to see you're blogging again!!! Have missed you! Been awhile since I checked in--will be back daily now.

Also, Greeting Crabby & Foxy!

I'm fully on board. If he's nominated he'll be the best thing to happen to the GOP since they nominated Calvin Coolidge.

Great to hear from you, tater!

I'm on board as well. He makes me a little nervous as far as foreign policy, but certainly no more nervous than the current crop of morons who can't even mention American exceptionalism without undermining it.

And this is completely irrelevant, but Christie should have run against Obama. He will never have another chance to run for president.
