Abandoning Our Special Forces...?!

This is a long article, but I hope everyone reads it:

The Man Who Killed Osama bin Laden... Is Screwed:
For the first time, the Navy SEAL who killed Osama bin Laden tells his story — speaking not just about the raid and the three shots that changed history, but about the personal aftermath for himself and his family. And the startling failure of the United States government to help its most experienced and skilled warriors carry on with their lives.

It's disgraceful that these families have to worry about housing, bills and security in their civilian lives...

Part of me wonders why this dude didn't take a less stressful job within the military till retirement. I'm sure the guys who run BUDS or Navy Bootcamp would have loved to get him. The other part of me wonders why we didn't pay those assaulters the reward money to divy up.

There are smart moves you can make to take care of yourself after service. I made them. I guess when you are an ST6 dude you can't find the time. I had to suck up a pouge job for a year and a half. And it did SUCK. But now I'm medically retired, and while I don't get paid big bucks at least its something for my 13 years.

Of course, considering what I HAD TO DO over those 13 years... the medical retirement - well I really didn't come down well on the cost/benefit analysis. My body is pretty well destroyed - some days I can't get out of bed. But I'm sure so is his. I'm not saying this to be a dick. This guy has done so much for the country. More than I ever did. Its just surprising to me as smart as this man is, he didn't think about the future and just got out.

I would side with what Free is saying here. I did my time too, and got nothing but a swift kick in the ass when I got out. Why did he get out after 16 when he could have done 4 more behind a desk and then retired? Seems like kind of a not-so-bright decision to me.

I'll agree too. Knew former SF guys who are now full-time guys in the National Guard. Little travel away from the family, still getting promotions and points towards retirement. Still wearing the uniform and training soldiers.

There are ways to make a living in the military without staying on the pointy end.

Or, just suck it up and start a civilian career. Sure it sucks to start at the bottom again, but he is young and smart, he should do fine.

I noticed that most of the lifers looked like forty when they were still thirty.
I agree that someone with four years to go should have been smart enough to find some way to fihnish off his twenty.
I wonder if there is something about his leaving early that we don't know, like having to grandstand for Jug Ears as a condition of staying.

Yeah I look like hell ;)

I admit it.

I can't really talk, I walked out of the USMC with nothing really. So when my second rodeo started with the Army, I made sure I DOCUMENTED EVERYTHING and then claimed it when I got out... a year before I got out actually.

COM - If I had 16 good years, I damn sure would do another 4 in the Navy Reserve or National Guard. They don't all have to be in the same service.

The Reserves or NG would love to have a Seal and would pay for school if he needed a different MOS.

free0352 said...

Living proof of that right here, my first 8 years of service were with the Marines.

Bram said...

I had 6 in the Marines 4 in the Army National Guard. Another 10 years just wasn't worth with a civilian career, family, and a mortgage that E-5 pay wouldn't put a dent in if I was deployed again.

Just seems like there has to be more to this story. I agree with you guys... after 16 years, find a way to do 4 more and get all the bennies. It sure sucks though that none of those guys got some sort of bonus for offing that piece of shit. Hopefully OBL Shooter can find a new career for himself.

I put in 32 years in the AF all told, still suffer from PTSD anytime the cable goes out...

LATER!! ;-)

free0352 said...

Well you were in the Air Force, and I imagine to a guy in that service going without cable is pretty traumatic ;)

I wont say a word about Tater and his AF buddies. My dad was a fighter pilot and I spent many nights eating in the O club after he and my mom got divorced lol...

Oh just yanking a leg. There are a lot of grunts with shit in their pants alive today because of A-10 pilots.

SoLow said...

Amen to that, free.

Seems this story, or at least the healthcare issue, is being pretty well debunked. Maybe The Enquirer as the media source might have been a clue.

Oh, and twits like ribbet pushing a line/lie that the eeevviiilll Republicans are out to hurt our military, 'cause we know how anti-military the Republicans have historically been, is just too much. Like when they bring up Jesus, on whom they usually happily drop shit, they love to tout bullshit about how we hate the military. What a total maroon, ribbet.

Tater said...

Concur Rickvid, military never does well under Democrats. I've seen morons make the case that the Dems love us, but the reality is, they just want our budget for social welfare programs.

It was batboy.

Tater,

Very true.

SoLow said...

I'm a poster child for that concept, Tater. I got myself "downsized" out of the Corps during the Clinton administration.

rbb is the annoying kid in the pool yelling "look at me, look at me" and "watch this..." every twenty seconds because his parents never paid him any attention. Pathetic.

Jpck20 said...

Yeah like Rick said, looks like this story is bullshit:

Either:

1) The guy the writer invterviewed is a fucking fake and he got rolled

2) the writer reporter did an extremely shitty job in actual investigative journalism or just wrote a pile of shit for attention value.

CrabbyOldMan said...

Hoss, thats why I call him "reliably blathering bilge".

Funny how capitalism works..

Nit:
Have you ever watched the Military Channel?
There has been several times that an episode covering some really historic event features interviews of actual participants.
I have noticed that the American, German and Japanese have been well dressed and in nice surroundings. The British have been almost as well dressed and in somewhat poorer surroundings.
The Russians have been poorly dressed, and very often had uniform coats draped over what look to be shabby clothes. The surroundings have been shabbier than the clothes.
IT REALLY IS FUNNY HOW CAPITALISM WORKS.

Tater said...

LOL,

What on earth do you (or any other left-wing plushie) know about capitalism Natie-boy?

Zelda said...

We can't pay for your leech parents' welfare without capitalism, Nate. Very, very funny how that works.

free0352 said...

Yes, and it DOES work. Very well.

Nate said...

Indeed capitalism does work very well for those people with the talent, skills, and connections. I'm not convinced it would work so well for those that don't without interventions...

Zelda said...

As usual, you sound like an idiot. You think all the people who immigrate here have talent, skills or connections? Capitalism works or they wouldn't be here. But given what we know about your sad twat parents, I understand why you have confusion and doubts.

free0352 said...

Nah they just come here to suck nates tits- which he acknowledges he has

Nit/Knot:
RE: "I'm not convinced it would work so well for those that don't without interventions..."
Apparently the concept of being responsible and ambitious enough to make the best of whatever resources one has just doesn't enter into what passes for thinking among your ilk.
Can you even wipe your own ass, or do you expect your parents or the government to do it for you?
It is safe to say that "intervention" by insulating people from the consequences of their own acts and omissions only encourages further slacking.

Zelda said...

Well if it makes anyone feel any better, potential immigrants are taking one look at Nate's teats and staying put.

CrabbyOldMan said...

"intervention" sounds like something Nit picked up while he was sitting on Moma Leach's knee.

Zelda said...

Oh, Nate's ridiculous. People have come here with nothing and done better than any country on earth without the government wiping their ass every two seconds. He's the typical Honey Boo Boo "moderate." "Waaaaah! She has a sparkly princess crown! I want a sparkly princess crown toooooo!"
