"Read my lips, no new taxes" is widely touted as the straw that broke George H.W. Bush's re-election campaign, but the item scanner incident in the super market didn't help matters.
The media, seeking to recreate the rich guy that doesn't shop for himself scenario, edited a tape of Mitt Romney in one of Pennsylvania's superior convenience stores: WaWa.

Recently, Andrea Mitchell’s show on MSNBC spliced some parts of a Romney rally speech together to make it appear that the presumptive Republican nominee was utterly amazed at being able to order a sandwich via a touch screen at a Wawa.
When viewed in their entirety, Romney’s remarks were clearly about private-sector innovation. He mentioned Wawa’s touch-screen ordering as an example of what happens when companies compete." (source)
