Catholicism, Church and Comedy
Friday, April 11th - During his closing speech, Bill Maher made a statement in the context of comedy, that Pope Benedict was once a Nazi. Now obviously, the Pope was not a Nazi, but he was in fact a member of the Hitler Youth Club… then again, what son of Germany was not a member? Answer: The dead ones.
Friday, April 18th – As a product of HBO Entertainment clearly being intimidated by the Catholic League and the more-than-obvious hold they have on the current FCC administration, Bill Maher apologizes for his statement, clarifying for the obviously less-intelligent members of the world that it was all said in humor, in the context of comedy, and that obviously the Pope is not nor never was a Nazi.
Most of you have that have frequented this Blog during my time as a regular have some idea of what I am about and many of my views and beliefs. You know that I am not in any way, shape or form into religion and I believe that it is made up of embellished tales of real people who existed in the physical sense, not in the metaphysical, "magical" sense. I find it very hypocritical that Christians and Catholics can believe that Jesus really did cure the blind, turn water into wine and even resurrect from the grave after being viciously nailed to a cross, left to burn in the sun and sand storms and fed on by vultures and other scavenger-like creatures, but they take offense to the fictional mystical content in a book/movie such as Harry Potter.
Now, I am willing to agree that Bill Maher is known for pushing the envelope, and for being hypocritical himself for criticizing people for "barking for biscuits" when he, himself, does the exact same thing. I will also agree that it was a dumb move on his part to make such a statement, even more so while the Pope was actually in the USA, even if it was meant as a joke. Let's not lose sight of the fact that Bill Maher is in fact a comedian, who earns his living by being funny and appealing to a certain type of crowd. He is by no means, a voice of the world.
On the Opie and Anthony radio show this morning, guest William Donohue, President of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, made the argument that Bill Maher has essentially made Catholicism his comedic whipping boy. Donohue stated that "you don't see Maher making jokes about Muslims or other religions. It is clear that he has it out for the Catholic religion." This is where my argument begins with Bill Donohue. If you have ever watched the show Real Time with Bill Maher, you will know that over the years he has relentlessly wisecracked and criticized the Muslims, Christians, and Jews as well as a few jokes about Baptists.
(I also find it very hypocritical that Bill Donohue was responsible for demanding that the Opie and Anthony show be removed from the air in response to their "Sex for Sam" stunt in which a couple decided to have sex in a Catholic Church, and now that they are back on the air, he has absolutely no problem with using their Nationally Broadcast radio show as a vessel to "spread the Catholic word".)
This is just another example of how poorly Bill Donohue and the Catholic League operates in defense of Catholicism. He, himself rarely "discovers" these so-called atrocities committed against the Catholic church. His entire base of information is formed by a whisper-down-the-lane process. Basically, a Catholic witnesses an incident such as this, contacts the Catholic League, they let their Commander and Chief know and BOOM, cries of controversy hit the air ways, televisions and ever other possible form of media. What bothers me about this process is that once Mr. Donohue declares such incidents as blasphemy against the Catholic Church, he stands on a platform of about 5% fact and 95% speculation.
We all know that Bill Donohue doesn't tune in to Bill Maher every Friday night, whether it be to watch his show for his own amusement or in hopes to get another bullet to load the Holy gun with, because if he had he would know that Maher has joked about almost every religion on his show. Instead, Donohue makes a statement that Bill Maher does not joke about other religions. Why? Well, because Mr. Donohue knows that people would be far less outraged knowing that he has joked about other religions. But my making the unknowing believe that it was a calculated attack on Catholicism sounds the holy alarms that ring in the heads of good Catholic, God-fearing folk across the World.
I have always referred to Catholicism as the Holy Mafia. When you consider yourself to be a non-profit organization and one of the richest corporations in the entire world, there is an apparent conflict of interest. This never becomes an issue simply because the money and power they have is more than adequate to shroud them from prying eyes. It amazes me that no one that matters finds it in the least bit despicable that the Catholic Church continues to bully and operate in a thug-like manner, all in the name of God, and when they are questioned or scrutinized on it, they don't even try to defend themselves because you are immediately deemed as questioning the word of God.
Now, back on topic, why is it so wrong to poke fun at the Catholic Church, or any religion for that matter? Fans of comedy will remember that Lenny Bruce had his career all-but come to a halt when he began making jokes about God and the Church. I know many of you were outraged at the idea of Muslims wanting blood for a few cartoons that portrayed Muhammad in comedic fashion. In fact, if I am not mistaken, even the Vatican came out and said that they found it absurd that Muslims wanted to kill over a cartoon depiction of Muhammad. Yet another display of their blatant hypocrisy.
So, set aside any dislike you have for Bill Maher and tell me, was Comedian X wrong for making the joke he made (in the context of comedy) or do you find that the Catholic Church is unjust in demanding an apology?
Personally, I think that the number of Catholic parishioners is down and they need to make as much noise as possible to try and get some attention like a child throwing a tantrum.
