STEPHEN COLBERT '08: Funny or Sad Commentary on American Politics?

Comedian Steven Colbert (a Democrat that has actually been quoted by Hillary in sump speeches) has declared his candidacy "as both Democrat and Republican" for 2008. Obviously an innocuous stunt and ratings ploy at first glance, but as the 20-29 year olds actually say they would consider voting for him maybe a bit more nefarious.

Yesterday as I was listening to half a panel "of experts" say Colbert's faux-campaign was great and funny and the other half lambasting him for making a mockery of the political system that so many have died to preserve, I found myself less concerned with Colbert himself and his ratings grab than what the MTV generation expects from politics...

If the new Fox/Rassmusen poll is correct and 41% if the MTV Gen say they would consider Colbert...where have we gone wrong? Did Clinton start it with his sax? Was it the Wash DC Correspondents dinner? When did it become a presidential requirement to be funny, hip or cool? It's fine for a Prez to throw out a corny joke here and there, but can the younger generations differentiate between leadership and entertainment? When a comedian would be considered by almost half of a certain demographic I think we need to take a serious look at what message is being imparted. Not to sound like and old fart (trust me, I place sense of humor above most things I hold dear), but do we want future candidates being judged by how amusing they are? Is Colbert's ruse pushing the Presidency further into the realm of entertainment expectations when we are in the middle of a war on islamofascists?

The surgeon I picked is a humorless, emotionless man. That's cool with me. I didn't need jokes and horseplay with someone that was going to be cutting me open. That's how I feel about our leaders. I want them serious and focused and concentrating on keeping America safe and affluent. I could care less if they can deliver a joke or keep the 20 second attention span people amused...

The Question No One Wants to Ask...

Just to clarify (or qualify) this, I want to start by saying that I am A-okay with things in the world not being "fair"...

That being said, with all the world debate going on with North Korea and Iran's nuclear quests, I'm wondering how/why sovereign nations that have nuclear capabilities can tell other sovereign nations that they can't. Don't get me wrong, I don't want Iran or North Korea to have them and I don't think Pakistan or India should have them either.

I know that our political system and country in general is light years more stable...but what about Russia? They seem ready to implode at any moment. I guess I'm just wondering how we and other nuclear-equipped nations can impose nuclear limitations. Though, as I said, it's a seeming discrepancy that I'm perfectly content with.

No Halloween for Sex Predators

"...Convicted sexual offenders would be banned from distributing Halloween candy from their homes or taking part in any of the October holiday's activities if a proposed bill gains support.

Under Bill No. 5321 proposed by Rep. Fran Amos, R-Waterford Township, any parolee who was convicted of a sex crime against a victim under 18 would be banned from all Halloween activities.

The proposal - which will not take effect in time to impact this year's Halloween - states that a parolee is prohibited from "participating in any way in activities traditionally conducted during the evening of Halloween, including distributing candy or other items to children."

It also would ban a sex-crime parolee from leaving outside lights on or giving the impression that his or her house is occupied between 6 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 31, or any other locally designated Halloween celebration..." (source)

This should be a federal law. Then again, if they were all locked up for life or dead we wouldn't have to ponder 'how to enforce' a law like this...

I am also a bit appalled at all the schools that canceled their Halloween parades/parties across the country. Some because students dressed as Captain Underpants last year, some because of "safety reasons", some because the "costumes scare the younger kids" and the best (in a school near us)...a Pentecostal Mother was offended and none of the other parents spoke up. I also hate the "it disrupts the school day" rationale. It's ONE day and according to Al Gore there won't ever be a snow day again because the earth is we won't need to disrupt school for that.

And for your Halloween listening pleasure: The Misfits: "Halloween"

Global Warming ain't all bad

I've been tellin' you, Global Warming ain't all bad.
But now that the climate is warming, it is not just old trees that are growing. A Greenlandic supermarket is stocking locally grown cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage this year for the first time. Eight sheep farmers are growing potatoes commercially. Five more are experimenting with vegetables. And Kenneth Hoeg, the region’s chief agriculture adviser, says he does not see why southern Greenland cannot eventually be full of vegetable farms and viable forests.

“If it gets warmer, a large part of southern Greenland could be like this,” Mr. Hoeg said, walking through Qanasiassat, a boat ride from Narsarsuaq, a tiny southern community notable mostly for having an international airport. Two and a half acres near here of imported pines, spruces, larches and firs are plunked in the midst of the scrubby, rocky hillside next to the fjord, as startling as a mirage. “If it gets a little warmer, you could talk about a productive forest with enough wood for logs,” Mr. Hoeg said. UN Wants a Makeover

Tourists file down neat corridors lined with artwork from around the world. Most also get a glimpse of the historic General Assembly hall and Security Council chamber.

UN official Werner Schmidt conducts a very different kind of tour. He is the chief spokesman for the Capital Master Plan (CMP) - a renovation project that is projected to cost nearly $2bn (£1bn). (source)
Gee, I bet the ambassador from Iran or Saudi Arabia could help you find someone to help with the demolition.

Where do I send my check?

Thankfully Times Have Changed...

I know we all kvetch about the disintegration of American society, but there are many things that needed to change...

Ed McMahon was on FNC yesterday hawking his new book. I am no fan, but he was talking about some things I found pretty interesting. The first was that when he started in television (1957) they were not allowed to use the word "pregnant" for the first three years. They had to say "expecting" or "in the family way." I'd love to know the thought process behind that one...

Also, he was talking about America's reaction to the first "interracial couple" (Do you know who it was before you keep reading?). Desi and Lucy Arnaz. He said the network was inundated with mail blasting them for subjecting America to this couple... Crazy stuff huh?

This is a great article from the NYP:

"For evidence of how quickly the tide of war can turn, look no further than Osama bin Laden's latest epistle to his al Qaeda underlings in Iraq.

The theme of the audiotape, broadcast on al-Jazeera TV last week, is purportedly the need to avoid "division" in the prosecution of jihad.

The not-so-subtle message: You guys are screwing up - big time.

From his bloody-handed perspective, he's right to be worried.

Both American and civilian casualties in Iraq are on track to drop drastically for the second straight month - a direct result of the sharp rise in Iraqi cooperation with U.S. forces that has resulted from Gen. David Petraeus' so-called surge strategy.

"Among the things which sadden the Muslims and delight the unbelievers," bin Laden admits, "is the hindering of some combat operations against the enemy" due to, among other things, "treachery."

What's spurring the "treachery?"

It seems that some jihadists haven't been pursuing "unity" or "righteousness" as well as they should..." (Read the entire article)

Since the left demonized the surge and the DNC nominees are running on the fact that Iraq and the greater WOT is a failure, will they be disappointed with a marked improvement of the situation on the ground? Can they leave Bush-hate and political gain aside and join the push to squash al Qaeda for the greater human good...? I hope so.

Gerald Ford on The Clintons

"...Gerald Ford was disturbed by Bill Clinton's skirt-chasing ways - and thought he should check into a sex addiction clinic.

A new book on the late 38th President reveals he had strong views about the Clintons: He thought Hillary wore the pants and that Bill couldn't keep his zipped.

"He's sick - he's got an addiction. He needs treatment," Ford told Daily News Washington Bureau Chief Thomas M. DeFrank, author of "Write It When I'm Gone: Remarkable Off-the-Record Conversations with Gerald R. Ford."

Ford's wife, Betty, who founded a pioneering treatment center after her battle with alcoholism and drugs, agreed.

"You know, there's treatment for that kind of addiction," she told DeFrank during the same conversation in 1999. "A lot of men have gone through the treatment with a lot of success. But he won't do it, because he's in denial.

That opinion was based on behavior Ford witnessed the weekend he hosted the Clintons in Colorado.

"I'll tell you one thing: He didn't miss one good-looking skirt at any of the social occasions," Ford said later.

"He's got a wandering eye, I'll tell you that. Betty had the same impression; he isn't very subtle about his interest." (source)

...And who would know addiction better than Betty, right? In Christopher Andersen's book "Bill and Hillary" he said that Clinton staffers always knew when Bill was abstaining from his sex addiction because he'd give in to his Big Mac addiction and get chubby. He's looking pretty thin these days, so I guess he decided skirt was healthier than fast food...

From Around the Blogroll: Things You Shouldn't Miss

  • John Hawkins, of Right Wing News fame, asked 52 right-of-center Bloggers to rank from 1-5 the candidate they want to have the GOP nomination and 1-5 who they least want to have it... Fred Thompson cleaned up on the 'want' side and Ron Paul was the hands down winner of the "oh my God NO!" side. Go see the list...

  • There is an ongoing showdown in Berkeley (imagine that!) between USMC recruiters and the Code Pinkos. The John Stuart Mill quote the Marines placed in the window is too perfect -I bet the pinkos were seething in their Crocs. Of course it's Zombie that has the pics.

  • Jules Crittenden has an update on The New Republic's ongoing attempt to save face in the midst of the Pvt. Scott Thomas Beauchamp (the author of the much-disputed "Shock Troops" article in the New Republic's July 23 issue and also two previous "Baghdad Diarist" columns) debacle.

  • "Crime-Blogger" Lilo has a new site that will be solely dedicated to exposing and documenting the lowest of the low in our society...the sub-human scum bags that prey on children. She calls them Perverted Primates. And this story was actually quite refreshing!

  • Matt at St. Blogustine brings some attention to Fred Thompson's immigration plan.

  • Support Your Local Gunfighter has a post about a Philly woman that got 8 months in jail for sending her boss an angry letter. I'm wondering what the sentence would have been if he weren't a Muslim...

  • Captain America (First In!) is pretty pissed at what he calls Laura Bush's political pandering to Islam.

  • And because it's the weekend, this must end with a laugh. Once again I have to thank Tammi for alerting me to an editorial ("America Can't Win the 'War on Fire'") that Harvey (Bad Example) has over at IMAO. Many of the comments are equally witty.

Picture This: What if a Republican Said It...?

"...In what the Washington Post is describing as a "stumble," Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said in an interview with the paper Wednesday that Washington's high minority population is one of the reasons for the city's education problems.

Explaining why schools in Iowa are performing better than those in Washington, D.C., Biden told the Post, "There's less than one percent of the population of Iowa that is African American. There is probably less than four of five percent that are minorities. What is in Washington? So look, it goes back to what you start off with, what you're dealing with."

"When you have children coming from dysfunctional homes, when you have children coming from homes where there's no books, where the mother from the time they're born doesn't talk to them — as opposed to the mother in Iowa who's sitting out there and talks to them, the kid starts out with a 300 word larger vocabulary at age three. Half this education gap exists before the kid steps foot in the classroom,"
    the Delaware Democrat added..." (source)

And Trent Lott was forced to resign and engulfed in scandal for simply pacifying ancient Strom Thurmond on his 100th birthday... Can you even imagine what would be happening right now if Bush, Thompson or Romney had uttered these words?

And I guess I should mention a new book that details the history of the KKK: "Setting the record Straight: America's History in Black and White" and it's Democratic roots:

"...The original targets of the Ku Klux Klan were Republicans, both black and white, according to a new television program and book, which describe how the Democrats started the KKK and for decades harassed the GOP with lynchings and threats.

An estimated 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites died at the end of KKK ropes from 1882 to 1964..." (source)

    Differences VS. Racism

Last night as I was bathing the boys, the older one was singing "Proud to be Black" (some old skool Run DMC --a song and album that I love BTW) and the little one asked if there was a song about being proud to be White... I was at a loss how to explain to them that if there were it would be considered racist. How do you explain that gaping discrepancy in our society to little kids?

No one wants to talk about it because no one wants to be considered a racist. Especially here in writing to people that have no idea what you're like and who your friends are in real life. I think the racial divide and discrepancy bothers me so much because I'm not a racist. Because I think it creates a larger gap when a gap shouldn't exist at all. My greatest hope is that my children are raised seeing the heart of the person and not their exterior, but how can that be when I am constantly quizzed about things like this?

I was thinking of all this as I was reading about the DNA scientist that was fired for saying that "Africans aren't as smart as Westerners". I didn't reaf the entire context of his statement, but it would seem like common sense as the majority of Africans aren't privy to the education that Westerners are...

A Blogger called Selwyn Duke has an insightful piece written about this story and his call for a definitive definition of "racism":

    "...What is “racism”?

Is it simply voicing beliefs about differences among races? Am I a racist if I say that blacks have darker skin and frizzier hair? No, I suppose not. What about if I point out that blacks commit an inordinate amount of crime and that 70 percent of black children are born out-of-wedlock, versus 27 percent for whites? Well, in our culture that is borderline. But why? On what basis should we determine what is “racist”?

One might think that pointing out negative characteristic qualities or the weaknesses of a race makes a person a racist, but even this cannot be so. After all, we take pains to emphasize that sickle cell anemia predominantly plagues blacks and that they are more likely to develop heart disease. Then there is the fact that Tay-Sachs Disease is found only among certain distinct groups, mainly Jews. In fact, were we to claim that these crosses are borne equally by all, we would be labeled “racist” for ignoring what ails minorities. It would be said that we really didn’t care if they lived or died. This gets confusing, though; on the one hand we’re castigated for pointing out differences, on the other we’re complimented for doing so.." (Read the entire post)

Fred Phelps Defends His "Church's" Actions in Court

As always, when I post about the horrid Fred Phelps I must remind everyone that he is a Democrat who raised money for Al Gore...

"The father of a Marine killed in Iraq took the stand in his invasion of privacy suit against a fundamentalist church that pickets soldiers' funerals, saying protesters carrying signs at his son's burial made him sick to his stomach.

Albert Snyder said Wednesday he had hoped for a private funeral for his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder.

"They turned this funeral into a media circus and they wanted to hurt my family," Snyder testified. "They wanted their message heard and they didn't care who they stepped over. My son should have been buried with dignity, not with a bunch of clowns outside."

Snyder is suing the Westboro Baptist church, whose members have picketed the funerals of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, claiming the deaths are punishment for the country's tolerance of homosexuality. The York resident is seeking unspecified monetary damages in the case for invasion of privacy and intent to inflect emotional distress as a result of the Topeka, Kan., church's protest at his son's funeral in Westminster in March 2006.
The case tests the limits of the First Amendment right to free speech.

U.S. District Richard Bennett instructed jurors at the start of testimony Tuesday that the First Amendment protection of free speech has limits, including vulgar, offensive and shocking statements. Bennett said the jurors must decide "whether the defendant's actions would be highly offensive to a reasonable person, whether they were extreme and outrageous, and whether these actions were so offensive and shocking as to not be entitled to First Amendment protection." (source)

So, is protesting the funeral of a soldier or marine that gave his life free speech? Does Phelps get that second amendment protection?

The Public Speaks...With Their Wallets, Not Bogus Polls

Supposedly "the majority" of Americans are against the war in Iraq. As I've contended for as long as we've been in Iraq -this number is the direct result of the way questions are asked during polls. The "majority" of that "majority" is probably against the war because of the ridiculous ROEs the troops must deal with and the subsequent murder trials....but I digress.

Hollywood has bet on those skewed poll numbers and produced a slew of Anti-Iraq war films --two of which have already been released:

"In the Valley of Elah" (written and directed by Paul haggis and starring Susan Sarandon, which pretty much tells you all you need to know) and,

"Rendition" (Here's a bit of the plot synopsis: "Meanwhile, at a secret detention facility somewhere outside the US, CIA analyst Douglas Freeman is forced to question his assignment in an attempt to save thousands as he becomes a party to the unorthodox interrogation of El-Ibrahim." (source)

"...It doesn't matter how many Oscar winners are in front of or behind the camera — audiences are proving to be conscientious objectors when it comes to this fall's surge of antiwar and anti-Bush films.

Both "In the Valley of Elah" and, more recently, "Rendition" drew minuscule crowds upon their release, which doesn't bode well for the ongoing stream of films critical of the Iraq war and the Bush administration's wider war on terror.

Beyond the fiction features, the anti-Iraq war documentary "No End in Sight" (box office: $1.4 million) couldn't capture the indie crowd, beating a swift retreat to DVD next Tuesday despite glowing reviews..." (source)

I hope all the actors and directors that have anti-war movies in the waiting to be released bins are starting to realize that those polls might have led them astray and maybe they should have traveled outside of the group-think bubble that is Hollywood before investing millions of dollars...

    How Old Do You Act?

...I think we did this before, but I forgot my result. I've been feeling really old lately. Thankfully the dumb quiz still puts me a couple of years younger ;)

    You Are 32 Years Old

Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.

13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.

20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.

30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!

40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

    Newsflash: Islam Violates Women's Rights

"...Donna Hughes, professor and Carlson endowed chairperson of the University of Rhode Island women's studies program, contended that Islamic fundamentalists violate women's rights yesterday. Her lecture in the Memorial Union was part of URI's College Republicans Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week.

Hughes told roughly 35 people in the audience that the two largest obstructions to women's rights are Islamic fundamentalism and sex trafficking...." (source)

Could the California Wildfires been set by al Qaeda trained arsonists?

"The FBI alerted law enforcement agencies last month that an al-Qaeda terrorist now in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.
The Republic reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country.

The memo noted that investigators couldn't determine whether the detainee was telling the truth.

The newspaper said many forest law enforcement officers it contacted had no idea the warning had been issued. " (source)

Cali Fires Blamed on Global Warming

"...Officials said Tuesday the winds and high temperatures are expected to continue. But when the fires do stop, lawmakers likely will debate the cause of the fire.

"One reason why we have the fires in California is global warming,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters Tuesday, stressing the need to pass the Democrats’ comprehensive energy package.

Moments later, when asked by a reporter if he really believed global warming caused the fires, he appeared to back away from his comments, saying there are many factors that contributed to the disaster..." (source)

Never mind history or anything and all the wildfires that happened while scientists were crying doom from the impending ice age and global cooling and recommending we dump hot ash on the polar ice caps (polar bear who?):

The Rattlesnake Fire of 1953 (1,300 acres & 15 firefighters killed)

There Will Never be Peace in the Middle East...

Isn't the first step in AA admitting there is a problem? I have to wonder if we would have a better chance at solving some major world issues if we all just admitted there will never be peace in the Middle East. Muslims can not will not co-exist with a race they deem dogs, pigs and infidels. It.will.never.happen.

    One example among thousands:

"...A leading Israeli Arab Muslim cleric said at the weekend that the Jewish state will very soon cease to exist and the whole of the country will come under Sharia (strict Islamic) law as another piece in the puzzle to reconstituting the Islamic Caliphate.

In an interview with a local Arabic-language newspaper, Sheikh Kamal Khatib, deputy head of northern Israel's Islamic Movement, insisted that the world is "on the threshold of a new era. The future belongs to Islam and the Muslims."

Khatib said that in preparation for the coming Islamic takeover, Muslims who hold Israeli citizenship like himself should begin to actively rebel against the state by refusing to cooperate with and forming alternatives to the Israeli authorities.

Also at the weekend, Khatib's boss, Sheikh Raed Salah denounced current peace negotiations leading to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Arab conflict as an "evil Israeli scheme." Salah, who is also an Israeli citizen, has long maintained that that Muslim world must not recognize Israel's right to exist.: (source)

If we scrap the "ME peace process" and all face the fact it can and will never happen...we could figure out what to do from there instead of prolong the facade while lives continue to be lost.

    Things Will Work Out. Right?

I just get sick and tired of reading crap like this. Especially with crap like this out there.

I believe with my entire soul that all things work for the good of those who are called according to His will. But, gee whiz, how far will the pendulum swing before swinging back.

I find myself tempted to wish the Islamic fanatics will solve this problem for us, but that isn't right, is it?

Just be patient. Things will work out. That's what we have to keep telling each other.

I think I'll go to Mass tomorrow morning.

Wow, McCain Gets Another 2 pts.!

"...Republican presidential candidate John McCain told workers of small weapons factory that he not only wants to catch Osama Bin Laden if elected, but said he "will shoot him with your products".

"I will follow Osama Bin Laden to the gates of hell and I will shoot him with your products," McCain said.

McCain told reporters afterward he was joking when he made the comment at Thompson Center Arms in Rochester.

"I certainly didn't mean I would actually shoot him. I am certainly angry at him, but I was only speaking in a way that was trying to emphasize my point," McCain said. "I would not shoot him myself." (source)

    Love, Sex and Cannibalism

I learned something the other day while working in the school library that I thought I'd share. (Those that think I post everything with a stern face, please stop reading now...)

The female praying mantis is often referred to as an example (proof in nature) of the voraciousness of the female gender. My entire life I assumed the oft touted biting off the the male mantis' head was a post-coital event...and had more to do with the male's lackluster performance than the ornery nature of the female.

Here's what I learned: The ensure the male doesn't get away (like the male Black Widow that has mastered the art of the hasty retreat), the female mantis actually bites the head off and eats it DURING the deed. But wait, it gets better... "...Decapitated, dismembered or not, the male still manages to complete the act before dying." (source: Wild, Wild World of Animals: Insects and Spiders)

I knew the brain wasn't located in the head on the shoulders! ;) Don't fret though, Dad's digested head goes on to provide the sustenance for the eggs the female will lay --nature's way of avoiding the hassle's of family court later in life...

    2 Pts. for McCain

I know you've all probably seen this already, but it was pretty good...

...and in case you thought McCain was embellishing: Hillary did seek to use $1 million in tax payer money for a Woodstock Museum --and even worse, they put it in an education bill.

"... The Senate voted Thursday to kill a $1 million grant for a museum on the site of the 1969 Woodstock concert, a rare rebuke of a legislative pet project and a blow to the presidential candidate who backed it, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Clinton and her New York colleague, Sen. Charles Schumer, had the funding inserted into the $604 billion education and health spending bill. The Woodstock project's main backer, Alan Gerry, is a registered Republican who recently became a major contributor to the Schumer-led Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee." (source)

When I was a teenager I asked my mom why her and my dad didn't go to Woodstock. She looked at me like I had two heads and said, "Um, because we had jobs." :)

Nobel Laureate Says 9/11 "Not So Bad"

"Nobel laureate Doris Lessing said the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States were "not that terrible" when compared with attacks by the IRA in Britain.

"September 11 was terrible, but if one goes back over the history of the IRA, what happened to the Americans wasn't that terrible," the Nobel Literature Prize winner told the leading Spanish daily El Pais.

"Some Americans will think I'm crazy. Many people died, two prominent buildings fell, but it was neither as terrible nor as extraordinary as they think. They're a very naive people, or they pretend to be," she said in an interview published Sunday.

"Do you know what people forget? That the IRA attacked with bombs against our government; it killed several people while a Conservative congress was being held and in which the prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, was (attending). People forget," she said..." (source)

Okay, here's the difference Ms. Nobel Laureate. America was not involved in a civil war. America didn't colonize another country that didn't want to be under our control and was striking back. America didn't spawn al Qaeda. We get accused of wanting to take over the world, yet we haven't taken over anyone. We don't hold two countries that don't want to be held under our government. All we did was believe in free trade and capitalism and women's rights. Quite a difference if you ask me.

UK Even More CYA Than America...

    At the Ready...if that's possible.

This one's for my Dad, Uncle, brother, brother-in-law and Captain America:

Firefighters in the U.K. have been told to "stay off ladders" because "they're too dangerous." Really.

"...If there was so much as a cat stuck in a tree, the firefighters of Ampthill would be up their ladders in a trice.

But now they have been told they cannot even bring down old festival bunting... because that would be too dangerous.

Resident Charlie Garth said: "I'm sure our brave firemen aren't frightened about falling off a little ladder. They have never looked afraid of heights to me."

Deputy chief fire officer Graeme Smith said: "Yes it sounds like the world has gone mad. Firefighters will climb ladders to rescue people from burning buildings but not to remove bunting after a festival." (source)

Sit on a Thief & Avoid a Lawsuit

The crazy protect the bad guy direction our legal system has gone leaves property owners subject to lawsuits for protecting their own. I may have mentioned this before, but a commenter here knows of a current case where someone that was stealing seafood from a grocery store is now suing said store because he slipped and hurt himself in the race to get out of the store with his pilfered lobster. He'll probably win.

I don't know if that was Jeffrey Stephens' motive when he restrained a would-be thief by sitting on him until cops arrived, but maybe he'll have stopped a robbery and avoided a lawsuit. A major coup in today's world...

"...Jeffrey Stephens and his wife Patricia recently awoke after their dog started barking. Patricia said when she went to investigate, she found a 20-year-old man going through the back seat of a neighbor's van.

Jeffrey Stephens confronted the younger man, who claimed the van was his friend's, and the two scuffled. The younger man eventually lost his jacket, shirt, shoe and sock in the tumble.

And then, Jeffrey Stephens, who weighs 200 pounds, sat on the would-be burglar.

Patricia Stephens called authorities and said she looked out her window and described exactly what she saw, that her husband was sitting on someone.

The 20-year-old was arrested and is expected to be in court this week." (source)

Pedophilia: More Prevalent or Just More Reported?

I'm not sure what all of you think qualifies someone as a pedophile. For me that term doesn't just apply to adults that sexually assault and prefer small children...A 35 year old man that has sex with a 16 year old is still a pedophile in my eyes. And if that man is a teacher, he's worse than a pedophile because he's taking advantage of a fundamental trust between student and educator. With that being said, you really need to read this entire article:

"...The young teacher hung his head, avoiding eye contact. Yes, he had touched a fifth-grader's breast during recess. "I guess it was just lust of the flesh," he told his boss.

That got Gary C. Lindsey fired from his first teaching job in Oelwein, Iowa. But it didn't end his career. He taught for decades in Illinois and Iowa, fending off at least a half-dozen more abuse accusations.

When he finally surrendered his teaching license in 2004 — 40 years after that first little girl came forward — it wasn't a principal or a state agency that ended his career. It was one persistent victim and her parents.

Lindsey's case is just a small example of a widespread problem in American schools: sexual misconduct by the very teachers who are supposed to be nurturing the nation's children.

Students in America's schools are groped. They're raped. They're pursued, seduced and think they're in love

An Associated Press investigation found more than 2,500 cases over five years in which educators were punished for actions from bizarre to sadistic.

There are 3 million public school teachers nationwide, most devoted to their work. Yet the number of abusive educators — nearly three for every school day — speaks to a much larger problem in a system that is stacked against victims.

Most of the abuse never gets reported. Those cases reported often end with no action. Cases investigated sometimes can't be proven, and many abusers have several victims.

And no one — not the schools, not the courts, not the state or federal governments — has found a surefire way to keep molesting teachers out of classrooms.

Those are the findings of an AP investigation in which reporters sought disciplinary records in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The result is an unprecedented national look at the scope of sex offenses by educators — the very definition of breach of trust.

The seven-month investigation found 2,570 educators whose teaching credentials were revoked, denied, surrendered or sanctioned from 2001 through 2005 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Young people were the victims in at least 1,801 of the cases, and more than 80 percent of those were students. At least half the educators who were punished by their states also were convicted of crimes related to their misconduct.

The findings draw obvious comparisons to sex abuse scandals in other institutions, among them the Roman Catholic Church. A review by America's Catholic bishops found that about 4,400 of 110,000 priests were accused of molesting minors from 1950 through 2002.

Clergy abuse is part of the national consciousness after a string of highly publicized cases. But until now, there's been little sense of the extent of educator abuse..." (Read the rest of the article)

    Socks Got the Boot...

It seems that first pet "Socks" (bought by Hillary because polls said she needed a softer image) got booted from the presidential family as soon as Clinton's two terms came to an end.

"...AS THE “first pet” of the Clinton era, Socks, the White House cat, allowed “chilly” Hillary Clinton to show a caring, maternal side as well as bringing joy to her daughter Chelsea. So where is Socks today?

Once the presidency was over, there was no room for Socks any more. After years of loyal service at the White House, the black and white cat was dumped on Betty Currie, Bill Clinton’s personal secretary, who also had an embarrassing clean-up role in the saga of his relationship with the intern Monica Lewinsky.

Some believe the abandoned pet could now come between Hillary Clinton and her ambition to return to the White House as America’s first woman president.

Clinton’s treatment of Socks cuts to the heart of the questions about her candidacy. Is she too cold and calculating to win the presidency? Or does it signify political invincibility by showing she is willing to deploy every weapon to get what she wants?

“In the annals of human evil, off-loading a pet is nowhere near the top of the list,” writes Caitlin Flanagan in the current issue of The Atlantic magazine. “But neither is it dead last, and it is especially galling when said pet has been deployed for years as an all-purpose character reference." (source)

How about that beautiful chocolate lab Buddy (also the direct product of polling0 you might ask in light of Socks' fate? Shortly after leaving the White House, Buddy was killed by a car. I wonder what all the rescue and PETA people will have to say about that...?

"Hate Crimes" Higher Among Muslims or Jews?

Listening to the MSM, the ACLU and CAIR you'd think hate crimes against Muslims were on a serious incline since 9/11...but actually it's hate crimes against Jews that are rising. In NYC crimes against Jews increased by 15% already this year. As I was reading the article detailing this increase I remembered something interesting I had read on Flickr the other day concerning the Israeli security wall:

"...In the years before and after the decision to build the fence, 24 suicide bombings took place in Jerusalem , killing 249 Israelis, injuring hundreds more, and traumatising thousands. In addition there have been many other attacks in the city, including shootings, stabbings and kidnappings.

The attackers have been Palestinians from towns and villages in the West Bank, including Bethlehem , Nablus and Jenin. The peak years for these attacks were 1996-7, and 2002-3.

Since 2003 the number of attacks has dramatically reduced
. Most Israelis attribute this to the security fence. Even the leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad has admitted that the fence is an “obstacle” and “if it were not there the situation would be entirely different….”.

A perspective on these attacks: comparisons with six world cities

To provide perspective on these attacks we have calculated what the equivalent number of attacks and casualties would be in six major world cities. Population figures for these cities are from authoritative sources cited on Wikipedia. We have used 730,000 as the population of Jerusalem , again taken from Wikipedia.

    New York

16 million (in metropolitan area; 21.9 times larger population than Jerusalem )
Equivalent number of casualties would be…. 5457
Equivalent number of bombings would be… 526

12 million (in metropolitan area; 16.4 times larger population than Jerusalem )
Equivalent number of casualties would be…. 4083
Equivalent number of bombings would be…. 394

3.5 million (4.8 times larger than Jerusalem )
Equivalent number of casualties would be…. 1195
Equivalent number of bombings would be…. 115

9.5 million (in metropolitan area, 13.1 times larger than Jerusalem )
Equivalent number of casualties would be….. 3262
Equivalent number of bombings would be…. 314

3.7 million (5.1 times larger than Jerusalem )
Equivalent number of casualties would be…. 1269
Equivalent number of bombings would be… 122

3.0 million (4.1 times larger than Jerusalem )
Equivalent number of casualties would be… 1021
Equivalent number of bombings - 98

Comments: In the 7/7 Tube attacks in central London in 2005, 52 people lost their lives. The suicide bombings which the citizens of Jerusalem have experienced represent the equivalent of 78 such attacks, in terms of the equivalent number of casualties. The figures for the six world cities above demonstrate the context for Israel's decision to build the fence around the city." (source:Davidb1)

    Site Problems

As much as I'd love to place all the blame the site has been having on Internet Explorer (why are so many of you still using it?!), I think Comcast is mostly to blame (though Firefox and Netscape still had no problem with Comcast's mess up and IE choked).

My husband, The Man, is the man and figured out the problem last night. He reformatted my entire template for me and hopefully the problem is now fixed for all of you (it was always okay for us because we use Firefox...okay, I'll stop).

So everyone say thank you to my very tall, muscular, handsome, sexy blue-eyed man for his self-taught computer savvy and extreme patience... :)

Giuliani Looking for the "Racist Vote" by Ordering a Cheesesteak?!

Um, puh-lease. If that accusation isn't playing the race card I don't know what is. Rudy Giuliani's recent trip to Geno's Steaks had NOTHING, let me repeat...NOTHING, to do with race. Geno's rival cheesesteak shop has staked their territory as DNC friendly replete with Kerry signs during the last election. For that alone it would have been ridiculous for a GOP candidate to choose the inferior cheesesteak.

BUT, the main issue here is that the left is once again trying to muddy the ILLEGAL immigration debate with race... It's getting old and tired and just plain trite at this point. I don't care if you have white blonde hair and crystal blue eyes with Nicole Kidman porcelain skin...if you're here illegally you need to be held accountable on your way out. Equal Opportunity deportation.

This rant brought to you courtesy of Philadelphia Weekly. The paper asked a few Philly Bloggers for a blurb about Giuliani's recent Philadelphia Geno's trip. I wrote lightheartedly as should have everyone. It's a trivial issue in serious times...but I just finished reading some of the other reactions and I'm almost appalled. Ick, these people are nasty...and bitter...and obviously lonely.

Hungry for Votes: Republican presidential candidate Rudolph Giuliani didn't visit Geno's for the food. Outspoken Philadelphians weigh in on the messy implications of Cheesesteakgate.

USMC High School Coming to Chicago

"Chicago Public Schools, which already has the largest junior military reserve program in the nation, on Monday will commission the country's first public high school run by the U.S. Marines, much to the chagrin of activists who have fought to keep the armed services out of city schools...

In general, the academies operate like regular public high schools. Students take a college prep curriculum and are taught by certified public school teachers. They have the same academic graduation requirements as other students in the district.

Cadets are not required to enlist in the military after graduation." (There is also an Air Force Academy High School proposed for 2009).

    Critics say:
"We're already the most militarized school system in the nation, and the [district] officials just keep opening more programs, as if they have no problem being a recruitment tool for the military," said Brian Roa, a member of the National Network Opposing Militarization of Youth and a science teacher at Senn High School on the North Side. Senn shares a building with Rickover Naval Academy. "Chicago Public Schools should be in the business of educating children, not finding ways to indoctrinate them into the military."

"Let's face it, the academies are about recruitment, not academics," she said. "I think the government feels like these kids are expendable. They are saying, 'You can put the poor and minority students on the front lines.'" (source)

From what I can find online, the JROTC and ROTC statistics are more than encouraging. Higher graduation rates and schools that have ROTC programs ranking higher academically. Studies have also shown that the ROTC helps even the playing field with over 50% of the officer candidates being minorities. Maybe activists are mad that ROTC enrollment is at least 3X higher than that of the Peace Corps, but in the wake of school shootings, rapes and drug use in the hallways --I think a bit of marine style discipline might be exactly what's missing.

Will the Real Giuliani Please Stand Up...

Rudy said, "I think that George Soros and is kind of a new low in vicious, politics of personal destruction…Every campaign I’ve ever seen from them has been about personally destroying the Republican."

But in 1996, speaking to the Kennedy School of Government, Cambridge in 1996, Rudy said this:

"...I believe the anti-immigration movement in America is one of our most serious public problems. And Washington is only making the problem worse.
Today I am also announcing that my office will be working with a coalition of well-known individuals and organizations who oppose the anti-immigration forces now being seen in Washington and elsewhere.

George Soros, international financier and founder of the "Emma Lazarus Fund," which assists legal immigrants..." (source)

Interesting. Giuliani appointed Soros to combat those that would seek immigration limitations...

Rudy said, "I gave my blood for the Republicans in New York."

But, back in 1996 he told Charlie Rose:

"Well, I'm a Republican mayor, but I"m really not. I'm the mayor of New York City. I ran as a Republican, I ran as a Liberal — which really confuses all kinds of people — and I ran as an Independent, as part of the Independent Party, which actually is now the party that's supporting Ross Perot. So I ran a fusion candidacy, like my predecessor Fiorello LaGuardia. So I'm not the most partisan of Republicans."
    (source1, source2, source3)

    Thompson says:
“I am the consistent conservative,” Mr. Thompson said to several dozen people at a gathering of the New York Conservative Party with former Senator Alfonse M. D’Amato at his side. “I was a conservative yesterday. I am a conservative today, and I will be a conservative tomorrow.”

It is not the time for Republicans who think the best way to beat Democrats is to become more like them."

Hillary Gets Served... a NYT reporter no less.

"...A recent book by two Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters, [says] Clinton listened to a secretly recorded conversation between political opponents.

In their book about Clinton’s rise to power, Her Way, Don Van Natta Jr., an investigative reporter at The New York Times, and Jeff Gerth, who spent 30 years as an investigative reporter at the paper, wrote: “Hillary’s defense activities ranged from the inspirational to the microscopic to the down and dirty. She received memos about the status of various press inquiries; she vetted senior campaign aides; and she listened to a secretly recorded audiotape of a phone conversation of Clinton critics plotting their next attack.

“The tape contained discussions of another woman who might surface with allegations about an affair with Bill,” Gerth and Van Natta wrote in reference to Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton. “Bill’s supporters monitored frequencies used by cell phones, and the tape was made during one of those monitoring sessions.” (source)

Not surprising that the GOP contension is --how can Hillary oppose wiretapping and listening to conversations of terrorists and suspected terrorists (serving the nation) when it was perfectly acceptable for her to do it during a campaign (self serving). And wasn't this what Nixon resigned for...?

    Kindergarten Sex Play?

If you haven't already read this story about a proposed Kindergarten program in Norway, you're not going to believe it (or sadly in this day and age, you will).

"...Norwegians woke up Tuesday morning to news that a respected Oslo pre-school teacher, backed by child psychologists, thinks children should be allowed to openly express their own sexuality, not least through sex play and games in the local day care centers known as barnehager, or kindergartens.

Pia Friis, leader of the popular Bjerkealleen Barnehage in Oslo and a well-known pre-school educator, told newspaper Dagbladet on Tuesday that children should be allowed to express their own sexuality at day care centers. She doesn’t want to stifle what comes naturally.

Children, she said, should be able "to look at each other and examine each other’s bodies. They can play doctor, play mother and father, dance naked and masturbate...." (Read the whole story at Stop the ACLU) will San Francisco or Massechuesetts be the first to jump on the bandwagon here?

    Follow the Money

For a change I am just entering a short post. You can’t swing a dead chicken in the media today without hitting somebody who is talking about how the massive amounts of cash that Obama and Clinton are raising is dwarfing what the Republicans are bringing. Let’s turn this around and take a look at it from an angle that the media is simply not covering.

Obama is raising money from scores of democrats across the country while Hillary is getting her funds from far fewer, but much wealthier donors (many of whom have their principle place of residence in the Peoples Republic of China. Maybe they are hoping that another Clinton presidency will mean another unchecked stream of leaks from military’s top secret files to Beijing).

The sheer number of people who are giving to Obama seem to come from a large contingent of Democrats who are holding up the “Anyone but Hillary” banner, and see the Illinois Senator as their best chance to avoid the shrill queen of the cankles.

The large number of donors that Barack can boast combined with the massive amount of money that is being raised to fight against Mrs. Clinton indicates that Hillary is polarizing even within her own party.

Liberal Lawyers Blocked Rescue of Kidnapped Soldier

We on the right have been chastised for saying that the far left puts the rights of terrorists above the lives of US soldiers. Well, if this isn't proof of those allegations, I don’t know how else to combat the serial denial:

"...U.S. intelligence officials got mired for nearly 10 hours seeking approval to use wiretaps against al Qaeda terrorists suspected of kidnapping Queens soldier Alex Jimenez in Iraq earlier this year, The Post has learned.

A search to rescue the men was quickly launched. But it soon ground to a halt as lawyers - obeying strict U.S. laws about surveillance - cobbled together the legal grounds for wiretapping the suspected kidnappers.

Starting at 10 a.m. on May 15, according to a timeline provided to Congress by the director of national intelligence, lawyers for the National Security Agency met and determined that special approval from the attorney general would be required first.
For an excruciating nine hours and 38 minutes, searchers in Iraq waited as U.S. lawyers discussed legal issues and hammered out the "probable cause" necessary for the attorney general to grant such "emergency" permission.

Finally, approval was granted and, at 7:38 that night, surveillance began.
"The intelligence community was forced to abandon our soldiers because of the law," a senior congressional staffer with access to the classified case told The Post.
"How many lawyers does it take to rescue our soldiers?" he asked. "It should be zero." (Read the entire story)

Is Massachusetts the New San Fran?

Well, here goes that slippery slope:

Sex with robots. Marriage to robots. Coming soon to Massachusetts?

"...Levy predicts Massachusetts will be the first jurisdiction to legalize human-robot marriage.

"Massachusetts is more liberal than most other jurisdictions in the United States and has been at the forefront of same-sex marriage," Levy said. "There's also a lot of high-tech research there at places like MIT."

Although roboticist Ronald Arkin at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta does not think human-robot marriages will be legal anywhere by 2050, "anything's possible. And just because it's not legal doesn't mean people won't try it," he told LiveScience.

"Humans are very unusual creatures," Arkin said. "If you ask me if every human will want to marry a robot, my answer is probably not. But will there be a subset of people? There are people ready right now to marry sex toys."

The main benefit of human-robot marriage could be to make people who otherwise could not get married happier, "people who find it hard to form relationships, because they are extremely shy, or have psychological problems, or are just plain ugly or have unpleasant personalities," Levy said. "Of course, such people who completely give up the idea of forming relationships with other people are going to be few and far between, but they will be out there..." (You MUST read this article)

    You Want National Healthcare?

The UK is how much smaller than the US…and people there are pulling their own teeth because they can't find dentists and they don't understand the fee system.

"Large numbers of people are going without dental treatment and some even report extracting their own teeth because they cannot find an NHS dentist in their area, a survey reveals today.

The Dentistry Watch survey of more than 5,000 people, from the Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health, found widespread unhappiness among both patients and dentists despite government reforms to increase the availability of NHS dentistry.

More than three-quarters of those who have a private dentist consider they were forced into it because their own dentist went private or they could not find an NHS dentist.

"Fourteen teeth have had to be removed by myself using pliers," said one Lancashire respondent. "Have pulled teeth out before, easier than finding a dentist," said one in Hull. "Because I could not afford the treatment cost, I had to extract my own tooth on one occasion," said one in Harrow. "I took most of my teeth out in the shed with pliers. I have one to go," said another in Wiltshire.

Some of the respondents show considerable ingenuity. "Filled own teeth - clove oil and Polyfilla," said one in Essex. Another fixed a crown with Superglue and a third used a screwdriver to scrape off plaque." (source)

...But since OUR government has proven themselves to be so efficient with federal programs, money management and organizational skills...sign me up for that healthcare and dental program!

First Rosie, Then Hillary...and Now Sean Penn

"...Muslim terror leaders are hailing statements by actor Sean Penn regarding Iran, the war in Iraq and the global war on terror, stating militants have "deep respect" for Penn and urging Americans to listen to the outspoken Hollywood activist immediately.

One senior jihadist leader even asked Penn to officially represent his terror organization's cause to the world media.

"I tell Penn that we don't have the money that the Zionists have, therefore we don't own and we don't have access to your media, and we hope you would ... represent our pain and our cause," stated Abu Hamed, northern Gaza Strip commander of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades Palestinian terrorist organization.

Klein also had a 2007 speech Penn delivered in solidarity with Iran translated into Arabic and read for the terror leaders.
"You want to rattle sabers toward Iran now?" asked Penn in his speech delivered at U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee's March 24 "Town Hall Meeting" on the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.
"Let me tell you something about Iran, because I've been there and you haven't. Iran is a great country. A great country. Does it have its haters? You bet. Just like the United States has its haters. Just like the United States has a corrupt regime. Does it want a nuclear weapon? Maybe. Do we have one? You bet," stated Penn.

The terrorist compelled all Americans to listen to Penn [immediately]. Bush is leading you toward a bigger, much bigger disaster."

"You Americans will pay the price and we hope [Penn's message] will be understood by the American public." (source)

This should be a piece in The Onion, but it’s not.

Silly String Will Finally Get to Iraq

Almost a year ago I posted about the soldiers' request for silly string and how it was being used in Iraq to detect trip wires. After all this time, lots of bureaucracy and tons of red tape (because the silly string comes in aerosol cans and is considered hazardous material) the shipment of the potential life-saving toy is finally on it's way to Iraq.

"...After months of frustration, a mother of a soldier in Iraq has found someone to ship about 80,000 cans of Silly String to the troops, who use the foamy substance to detect trip wires on bombs.

"I'm just thrilled," said the woman, Marcelle Shriver. "I couldn't sleep too well this whole weekend thinking about it."

The thousands of cans of Silly String are boxed and addressed to individual servicemen and servicewomen in Iraq. But since the string comes in an aerosol can, it is considered a hazardous material, and only certain companies can ship it.

Thom Campbell, one of the founders of Capacity LLC, a New Jersey-based shipping company experienced in hazardous materials, heard about Shriver's problem and decided to help out.

"It seemed like the right thing to do," Campbell said. "We're quite lucky to have an opportunity to help her."

The boxes were to be picked up Monday in Deptford Township, where Shriver has been storing them. They will be inspected by the company and then delivered to the United States Postal Service for transport with other letters and packages bound for Iraq..." (source)

Wouldn't you think the pentagon could've helped out with such a simple request...? Yeah, let the government take over healthcare....

    Gore-y Details

So, anyone with half a brain saw the push for Gore to run in the '08 election coming. The Emmy, the Oscar and now the Nobel Peace Prize (you gotta love that Alfred Nobel made his fortune inventing dynamite...solidifying the peace by superior fire power mantra I guess...) has put Gore front and center to reclaim what was 'stolen' from him.

Of course all this award for Gore really means is the man-made Global Warming hype has just earned its way to a front and center spot on the Dems' '08 talking points and campaign platforms. ...We'll just pretend we weren't going to drop hot ash on those melting polar ice caps just 20 years ago to stop the man-made Global Cooling...

Newsbusters is all over the Al-pocrisy: One of the stories they have up is about Dr. William Gray (Colorado State University). Gray was "thrust into the limelight as one of the leading hurricane forecasters in the world.

On Friday, deliciously coincident with the Global Warmingist-in-Chief receiving likely the first of many Nobel Peace Prizes, Dr. Gray spoke to a group of meteorologists and students at the University of North Carolina telling the audience that the theory of manmade climate change is "ridiculous" and the product of "people who don't understand how the atmosphere works." Dems Fear NASCAR Cooties?

"...a Democratic official suggesting staffers get immunized for several diseases before heading south from Washington and into the Red State wilds of NASCAR country to conduct research at a pair of races.

In an e-mail, a staffer who works for committee chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., noted an "unusual need for whomever attending to be vaccinated against hepatitis A and B," as well as "the more normal things - tetanus, diphtheria, and of course, seasonal influenza."

The note didn't explain why the committee saw such concern. It didn't mention NASCAR or the races at the tracks at all. But the implication was enough.." (source)

Isn't this just too funny...well, sad but funny in a "this is the party of tolerance" kind of way. Accept jihadists as mislead souls that are just reacting to George Bush's war crimes, but wear a HAZMAT suit around those damn inbred NASCAR might come home with an unexplained #3 decal in your window!
