"One often hears Big Government or Government employees or Government programs assailed for being wasteful, innefective, bloated, non responsive...you name it. And it is true. One trip to the Drivers License Office and you can see Big Government in action...or inaction. Republicans and Conservatives are famous for their criticism of Big Government and Ronald Reagan made this sentiment famous with his "Government is the problem" statement.

But the "WHY" is never sufficiently and clearly explained. Are the Government employees just all lazy? No.

It's simple. 1. No competition, and 2. Pay not based on performance.

Imagine you walked into work tommorrow and your Boss announced "Great news...we no longer have any competitors!" (They've been outlawed in the case of the Government) and "With no more competition, your pay will no longer be based on your performance, simply your tenure."

Think about it...how would you perform going forward? I'll tell you...not so good. Why would you...it doesn't matter...at least not to you. Oh, it still matters to your customers...but what are they going to do...go somewhere else to get their license? No they are just going to take it...and complain.

Want a real world example...think of an Industry where private enterprise/competition has horned in on a previous Government monoply...Package Delivery. Do you think for one minute we would enjoy the speed and reliability we currently have via UPS and FedEx if they had not been allowed to enter the market? No way!

Now think about slow Hurricane Katrina aid...no it is not because President Bush dislikes Minorities, or Karl Rove blew up the levies... no it's "let's see, should I move this case of water now or after lunch?"

And the next time you see a road crew digging a hole with one digging and four watching...don't just shake your head...remember they are the only ones that can dig that hole (no competition) and it doesn't matter if it gets dug today, tommorrow or the next day (pay not based on performance)

Now think about what shape our much maligned Education system would be in today had we allowed competiton (Vouchers) in 20 years ago!
