Let's Be Honest About the Iranian Situation -by J.Marquis

"I heard a former CIA operative make an interesting point on MSNBC's Countdown program tonight. He said the Shiite militias are getting some arms from Iran and the Sunnis are getting a lot of arms from Saudi Arabia (via Jordan).

The really important point he made was about how those weapons are being used. Ninety two percent of the time an American soldier is killed it's because of a Sunni insurgent. The remaining eight percent are killed by the Iraqi Shiite militias.

It's one thing for the Bush administration to come out and say they want to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities. At least we could have an honest discussion about the pros and cons of yet another pre-emptive war in the Middle East.

It's quite another to play this feverish little game where the public gradually gets coaxed into a military action against Iran. The dead American soldier statistics would say we'd be much smarter to attack the Saudis. But that's never gonna happen with a Bush in the White House."
