Nicotine Increase Confirmed!

I knew it! I've been saying for years that the initial government mandated regulation and subsequent increase of nicotine in tobacco puts today's smokers in a much more perilous situation than those lecturing smokers of yesteryear. When people tell me they quit with no accoutrements in (fill in the year) and that I should be able to also --I nod and smile and think to myself..."Yeah right, I'd pay to see you do it now."

"Tobacco Companies Have Increased Addictive Nicotine 11 Percent Over Recent Seven-Year Period (Harvard Study)

"The discovery of an 11 percent increase in nicotine content, said Connolly, confirms recent statements by the US District Court for the District of Columbia that manufacturers have the ability to manipulate addictive additives, and, he said, "it underscores the need for continued surveillance of nicotine delivery in products created by an unregulated industry."

In an opinion in US vs. Philip Morris USA et. al. Judge Gladys Kessler wrote that tobacco companies "can and do control the level of nicotine delivered in order to create and sustain addiction" and further, that the "goal to ensure that their products deliver sufficient nicotine to create and sustain addiction influences their selection and combination of design parameters." (source)

There has been talk since 1999 of the Nicotine Vaccine and how promising the trials have been --obviously 7 years later we can assume that there's no way in hell the tobacco lobby will even let this vaccine see the light of day.

Here's the thing that really gets me about this --As smoking laws and bans pop up and increase all over the nation, the drug is becoming more addictive... YET, there is no help for smokers other than the "use your willpower" and "you have to really want to quit" but if we were heroin addicts the government would pay for free methadone and rehab (and it's been agreed that it tougher to quit smoking than quit heroin).
