House Majority Leader Murtha?

What message would Nancy Pelosi be sending if her first act as Speaker of the House (*shudder*) is urging fellow Democrats to appoint John Murtha Majority Leader? The reward for calling member of our military murderers and rapists is a top leadership position in the United States Congress? What message does that send the men and women putting their lives on the line every day?

"...Pelosi, in a letter distributed Sunday to newly elected House Democrats, wrote that Murtha's outspoken opposition to the war in Iraq helped change the electoral campaign for the House this fall. Murtha began calling for a U.S. pullout from Iraq a year ago, and his open opposition to the war made him a focus of intense criticism from Republicans and the White House.

Pelosi, though, credited Murtha, one of her closest allies in the House, with changing the national debate on the issue and helping provide Democratic challengers and incumbents with a winning argument for the mid-term elections. ..." (source)

Here's the worst part of the story...Murtha's opposition will be Maryland's Steny Hoyer who has one of the most abysmal voting records I have seen...way worse than Murtha's. There is no lesser of two evils here.

And then there's this:

"...Arabs also marveled at the election of the first Muslim to the U.S. Congress — Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison, who will be sworn into the House of Representatives with his hand on a Koran..." (source)

...And as I keep hearing Bush referred to as a "lame duck President"...Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't seem to recall them calling Clinton a "lame duck President" for the last 6 years of his Presidency.
