Predator in the House...
...sadly enough, that would be the House of Representatives.
Now, I'm going to start out on a very Partisan tone here and say that after the thousands of OpEds, articles, posts and diatribes from the left exonerating Clinton of his intern dalliance --I really don't want to hear a condescending word about Mark Foley from anyone that still cringes when they hear the words 'Ken Starr'. I especially don't want to hear anything about this one guy's actions being a reflection on the party. We are the 'tough on crime' party, the Megan’s law and Amber Alert party -- those that would use this to their political gain are the party of the 'fight for more rights for pedophiles and terrorists" ACLU party.
On the other hand, since I can personally empathize with a boss saying very inappropriate things and being that I vehemently condemned Clinton because of that boss/intern relationship, I can fully (and not hypocritically) express my disgust here...
Mark Foley, like Clinton (and yes, worse than Clinton), committed the cardinal crime of using power to sexually intimidate an underling. Foley apparently wrote nasty IMs (instant messages) to a 16 year old boy that was a part of the Congressional page program (Pages are high school students who attend classes under congressional supervision and work as messengers). He has embarrassed himself, his party, and disgraced the position he held in Congress. At least I was glad to read that, unlike McGreevey, Foley is single (see, maybe there is some merit to that 'beware of men that are still single after 35' theory....) I know the media will have a field day with this --remember what they did to Jack Ryan and he was only soliciting his own wife...
"...ABC News reported Friday that Foley also engaged in a series of sexually explicit instant messages with current and former pages, all male. In one message, ABC said, Foley wrote to one page, "Do I make you a little horny?"
In another message, Foley wrote, "You in your boxers, too? ... Well, strip down and get relaxed."
Foley, as chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, had introduced legislation in July to protect children from exploitation by adults over the Internet. He also sponsored other legislation designed to protect minors from abuse and neglect. "We track library books better than we do sexual predators," Foley has said.
Foley, who represented an area around Palm Beach County, e-mailed the page in August 2005. The boy was 16 at the time. Foley asked him how he was doing after Hurricane Katrina and what he wanted for his birthday. The congressman also asked the boy to send a photo of himself, according to excerpts of the e-mails that were originally released by ABC News." (source)
So yes, I'm disgusted --but I will be more disgusted if there is ramped hypocrisy here. Clinton had sex with a young intern. McGreevey had sex with a male staff member while he was married to a woman. Debra Lafave had sex with a 14 year old and got off because she was "too pretty for jail". It's all sick. Don't trivialize the misdeed by turning it into a hypocritical political circus.
