Indoctrinate them Young...

The Smurfs were Communists. They all looked the same, dressed the same, had the same house, (even shared the same woman) and were led by Papa Smurf who was the only one to wear red and a long white beard (Carl Marx?)...

Last night I was reading the boys "The Rainbow Fish" before I put them to bed --and how did I never notice the Socialist/Communist leanings of that little (wildly popular) children's tale as well?!

The Message: You're prettier and more well off than all the other fish and that's why no one likes you, but if you give away all your beautiful scales and all of the fish look and have the same...you will finally be happy.

I've read it a million times before and always just thought what a spineless wuss that little Rainbow Fish was --but the Commie message has previously escaped me. To see if I was just reading too deeply into things these days I decided to Google "Communism + Rainbow Fish" and there are other people that noticed it too.

One review in particular:

"This sounds like out right communism here. I don't like the message...
If you have read me over the years I believe you would find me as caring and sharing as the next guy. There are many wonderful books on the market and in libraries that give life lessons that I, as a parent and grand parent, feel are good for the moral and social growth of my children. Though this book has won many awards and is popular, I don't believe it is a good example of a book that espouses sharing in a proper way.

When I finished reading, my five year old grand daughter did not ask me to "read it again grandpa!" If she had, I would have found another book from which to tell a story and perhaps give a lesson in life." (source)

I think 9 months of pregnancy, DNA and thousands of dollars has earned me the right to indoctrinate my own children, thank you very much...
