John Mark Karr: Alabama's Marriage Laws

More disturbing to me than the (IMO) fabricated JonBonet confession from John Mark Karr is the fact that he legally married a 13 year old and then a 16 year old in Alabama. Now, I don't want to stir up North vs. South contentions --but this sort of thing may be why we Yanks have some misgivings about you folks in the South... ;)

From the Alabama "marriage license information" site:

Proxy Marriages: No.
Cousin Marriages: Yes. (*ahem*)
Common Law Marriages: Yes.
Same Sex Marriages: No.

Under 18:
If either of you are under 18, you will need a certified copy of your birth certificate. Both parents must be present with identification, or if you have a legal guardian they must be present with a court order and identification.

The state also requires a $200 bond to be executed, payable to the State of Alabama. If one or both parents are deceased, proper evidence of such must be provided. Individuals under the age of 14 may not marry. (source)

I don't know about ya'll, but I'd much rather see same sex marriages than 14 year old marriages and "cousin marriages"... but what do I know, none of my cousins are very attractive...
