"Apparently there are a number of people going around wearing uniforms that aren’t theirs and donning medals they didn’t earn and prosecutors are going after them.
U.S. Attorney Patrick Meehan can tell you some interesting stories about war hero imposters. “One of the individuals actually stepped into the shoes of another medal winner who landed a helicopter to take marines out of combat fire to later tell that story and in the need to have never been anywhere near that is just a disservice,” said Meehan.
Meehan’s office has already prosecuted two cases and is currently investigating another.
At the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum in Media, true stories of heroes aren’t hard find.“Webster lost three limbs in 1967,” said Meehan. Media Mayor and Vietnam Veteran Bob McMahon says he’s long known about people who lie about their service.
Some even claim to have earned a medal of honor, which is reserved for those who go above and beyond to save the lives of others. “It says something about our society. It says something about people wanting to feel part of something,” said McMahon.
Currently, there are 113 living Medal of Honor recipients, but according to the FBI, there are even more imposters.
Meehan says as a matter of principal his office will go after the dishonest.
"Those medals were earned by those who served," said Meehan." (source)
Almost as sick as the people that claimed they lost loved ones on 9/11 to get some cash. What is wrong with people?
