Andy Garcia Commits Cardinal Hollywood Sin...

Since I had to rag on Maggie buggy-eyes Gyllenhaal yesterday, I thought I'd point out some decent Hollywood news...ya know, 'cause I'm kinda fair and sometimes balanced...

Andy Garcia has got himself in quite a mess with his new pet-project movie 'The Lost City' (which he wrote, directed and stars in). Critics are frothing, Hollywood's panties are in a bustle and I am making a point to see this...

"Andy Garcia blew it big-time with his movie "The Lost City." He blew it with the mainstream critics, that is. Almost unanimously, they're ripping a movie 16 years in the making. In this engaging drama of a middle-class Cuban family crumbling during free Havana's last days, which he both directs and stars in, Garcia insisted on depicting some historical truth about Cuba – a grotesque and unforgivable blunder in his industry. He's now paying the price.

Earlier, many film festivals refused to screen it. Now many Latin American countries refuse to show it. The film's offenses are many and varied. Most unforgivable of all, Che Guevara is shown killing people in cold blood. Who ever heard of such nonsense? And just where does this uppity Andy Garcia get the effrontery to portray such things? The man obviously doesn't know his place." (Read the whole story)

Then again, what should we expect? Dan Rather has called Castro "Cuba's own Elvis". Oliver Stone's 'documentary' makes him out to be the ever-concerned dictator as he sets out to "portray the human figure" and The Motorcycle Diaries was up for Oscars...

Dustin Hoffman and Bill Murray are also in the movie... Garcia is a native Cuban whose family was exiled and fled to Miami when he was 5 years old. Hollywood may be upset, but I bet the Cuban-Americans are pretty psyched.
