South Parks Falls Victim to Scientology...

Wow, all these negative posts about Scientology might get me in more trouble than posting that letter from the Illuminati...

I just couldn't help but mention that Isaac Hayes QUIT his job as Chef's voice and Tom Cruise made threats --all over an episode of South park that made fun of Scientology. The episode was called "Trapped in the Closet" and it seems that Tom Cruise said he wouldn't promote Mission Impossible 3 if the episode was run again. Hayes, also a Scientologist, quit the show over the satire of his "religion". (source)

"This episode was partially inspired when the show's creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker heard from their good friend Penn Jillette was originally planning to do an episode of Bullshit! based on Scientology, but was scrapped by Showtime to avoid the possibility of legal action from the church itself.

Chef was notably absent from the episode, perhaps because Isaac Hayes (who provided his voice) is a Scientologist, though, as Chef has been absent in many episodes of recent seasons, this may be unrelated. In an interview for The A.V. Club on January 4, 2006, Hayes was asked about the episode. Hayes said that he told Parker and Stone, "Guys, you have it all wrong. We're not like that. I know that's your thing, but get your information correct, because somebody might believe that shit, you know? But I understand what they're doing. I told them to take a couple of Scientology courses, and understand what we do. [Laughs]"

On March 13, 2006, Hayes announced that he was quitting the show because of the series treatment of religion, though he didn't specifically mention Scientology in his statement. That same day, Stone responded to Hayes' departure in an interview with The Associated Press saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and, to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

This episode was scheduled to re-run on March 15, 2006, but that airing was cancelled without prior notice. In response to the preemption, Parker and Stone released the following statement:

So, Scientology, you may have won this battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun! Temporarily anozinizing our episode will not stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu!!!

Kooky, but it gave me an excuse to post the "Free Katie" t-shirts... I really have to order one of those...
