Philly Homicides Rising
"As homicide rates in many large cities are dropping, the number in Philadelphia has increased 11 percent since 2004 - one of the sharpest jumps in the United States. In 2005, Philadelphia police recorded 380 homicides.
Prior surges in the homicide rate had easy explanations. Gangs. Crack. The economy.
Not this time.
Experts find clues in police statistics. Seventy percent of Philadelphia's homicides involved young men in arguments. Some argued over drugs, but many feuded for far less.(source)
Well, at least we didn't have the very first homicide of 2006 --which happened just 15 minutes into the New Year. That was in Cincinnati.
Correct me if I'm wrong (any Philly FOP readers), but I am going to venture a guess and say that most of these murders take place in specific parts of Philly-- parts that you as a potential tourist would never be in/near to begin with (unless you got lost that is...or stayed at the Philly Zoo way later than you should have).
So don't let this deter a trip to the city of Brotherly Love --Just think "Center" and avoid "North" and "West"...
