NY: Abortion Capital of America

(I really try to stay away from the abortion posts, but this was just such an interesting and informative article...besides the fact that I haven't gotten ONE piece of hate mail in almost three weeks...*sigh* I must be getting soft)

Ryan Lizza has a fact-filled piece about NY state's abortion history and recent statistics in this month's New York Magazine. He keeps his opinions of the actual issue mostly to himself.

The facts that stood out to me:

-One in Ten abortion in the U.S. takes place in NY State (and out of those 7 out of 10 in NYC).
-One in 1,000 abortions in the U.S. take place in one clinic in New York City (they do about 11,000 abortion a year).
-NY has virtually no restriction on abortion.
No parental notification for pre-teens & teens.
No 24 hour waiting period or mandatory counseling.
-Both NYC & Brooklyn have a 1 - 1 Live birth/Abortion ratio. OMG!

OK, I have to say this --the instance of getting pregnant from rape/incest is less than 1% (the justification always given for no restrictions)...and a 1 - 1 ratio? Are people getting pregnant just to have abortions to prove they can? Has the Pill gone out of fashion? ONE TO ONE RATIO!

This is a five page article, but it delves into the history of abortion in NY (NARAL's conscious decision to target NYC in the 60's, the term "abortion mill" not being a pro-life term, but an actual term that described actual abortion mills in NYC, etc) and is well worth the read if you have the time...
