In Memoriam: Philly Loses a Policeman and a Fireman

Gennaro Pellegrini Jr; Philly cop, PA National Guardsman and Blue Horizon amateur boxer was killed in Iraq by a roadside bomb.

"He died in the line of duty defending his country," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, "It says a lot about him, a lot about his upbringing, a lot about his commitment to not only the citizens of Philadelphia, but to the citizens of the United States."

John Kulick, Whitpain Township firefighter and PA National Guardsman, was also killed Tuesday in Iraq.

"His friends all knew that Kulick had a higher calling. They said that he was emotionally touched by the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Because so many firefighters were lost in the World Trade Center towers, Kulick immediately enlisted in the Army National Guard and shipped out last fall.

"This was John's way of saying to the country, 'I want to step up and help this country,'" Fire Commissioner Carmarda said.
My thoughts and prayers go out to both families.
