Many people are speculating about the reasons that there has been wall-to-wall coverage about Natalie Holloway (who is missing in Aruba for those of you that live under a rock)... I have heard many people saying it's because she's white and pretty and has blonde hair and blue eyes. I don’t agree. There has been a girl (who is 5 mths. pregnant) missing in Philly since the 18th, and she just started getting air time Wednesday. (Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it was a week or two before Natalie’s story overtook the airwaves…)
I'll tell you why some stories have staying power. No cares about a boring story. They want intrigue and suspense. Look at our top TV shows (Law & Order, CSI) and top selling authors (James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark). People are going about this story all wrong. There is intrigue in this story, but it isn't getting 'played up'. Some may disdain that as sensationalizing --but it is the only way it will remain on national news.
Latoyia Figueroa is 24 years old, she has a seven-year-old daughter and is five months pregnant. She and her boyfriend were apart but "working things out" and he was the last one to see her. She was accosted by his ex-girlfriend a few weeks ago --the ex even kicked her in the stomach. Latoyia's grandmother said that they didn't even know she was pregnant until she disappeared...and that she never brought the boyfriend around or talked about him. Latoyia's mother was killed when she was a toddler. Also her uncle is an active member of the Philadelphia Police Department...and a homicide detective to boot. There is a lot here... they need to get people hooked on the soap-opera, mystery novel part of the story!
Unfortunately, things do not bode well for Latoyia. We have learned over the past few years that a woman's most vulnerable time is when she is pregnant (murder is the leading cause of death for pregnant women). The Philadelphia Police are an excellent Department and though, as of now, they are saying the boyfriend is cooperating and "not a suspect"...I have faith they know what they are doing and will solve this case. My heart goes out to Latoyia’s father and little girl.
