I was listening to a representative from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on the radio and her statistics were disconcerting to say the least. One in Five adolescents/teens that use the internet have been sexually propositioned.
"Children reported that they receive sexual solicitations in chat rooms, while using Instant Messenger (IM), on E-mail, in game rooms, and on message boards. In fact 65% of incidents occur in chat rooms and 24% happen on Instant Messenger (IM).2"
They have a great Resource Page for parents that schools you on all the acronyms used ("online lingo") and internet safety quizzes for both parents and kids. There is also a ‘true story’ section, which helps cure the ‘it could never happen to me’ instinct.
Since technology is expanding more rapidly than regulations and law...it is our duty as parents to be proactive and protect our children from predators in real life and virtual.
