Attending to the Borders...

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative:
"The Departments of State and Homeland Security announced today the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative to secure and expedite travel. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require all U.S. citizens, Canadians, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and citizens of Mexico to have a passport or other accepted secure document to enter or re-enter the U.S. by January 1, 2008." (State Dept.)

Names would be authenticated and checked against existing terror-watch lists. As might be expected, I am all for this (actually I don't understand why it hasn't been implemented already --and why it will take until 2008 to take effect). An OPED in a San Francisco paper says this is 'a time we should be moving toward more open borders', which is an asinine statement as far as I'm concerned. (source)I understand that this missive may be a hindrance to cross-border trade, but I think that American lives are well worth the inconvenience.

It would seem that had this been in place pre-9/11 most, if not all, of the murdering assholes highjackers would have been sent right back to where they came from. Another story currently in the news that highlights the relevance of this measure is the two sixteen year old girls who have been detained on suspicion that they were planning to be homicide bombers. In light of the glaring deficiencies of Homeland Security and border control, I am thrilled that citizens are taking initiative in Arkansas. These self-dubbed Minutemen have already alerted border control to 273 would-be illegals. This is not just an issue about Mexicans crossing over...but sealing up a potential portal for Al Qaeda sympathizers and would-be terrorists. I don't see the Minutemen as vigilantes...and I say 'rock on' to what they are attempting to do and to highlight to the country...(source)

These seem to be steps in the right direction for Homeland Security in regards to perspective infiltrators...but this still leaves the problem of finding possible threats that have already entered. We need to forget about being PC and begin to value American lives more than the fear of offending people...

update...
J. Marquis sent this article --about a family on the border and their encounters with illegals. The Minutemen are highlighting a need that this administration and all those that came before it choose to ignore for political reasons...
